  • How to clean your contact lenses
Wearing monthly and extended wear disposables also means taking extra steps to maintain the health of your eyes. Unlike daily disposables, extended wears and monthlies need to be cleaned and stored after use. Multipurpose solution Here are the steps you’ll need to take when removing and cleaning your contact lenses with multipurpose solution: Wash – Before handling contact lenses of any kind, you should always make sure your hands are clean. Use antibacterial soaps when washing your hands under the tap. This will keep harmful oil, perfumes and bacteria from contaminating your lenses. Dry – Wet hands increase the risk of infection. After washing them, dry your hands with a clean, lint-free towel. Remove – Remove a contact lens from your eye. For help in doing this, refer to our ‘How to Put In & Take Out Contact Lenses’ article. Rub – Put your contact lens on the palm of your hand. Pour multipurpose cleaning solution over the lens. Gently rub your lens with your finger into your palm, for around 30 seconds. This helps to remove surface dirt and other impurities. Rinse – Pour some more multipurpose solution over your lens. This helps to wash away excess impurities that may still be present after rubbing. Store – Place your lens into your lens case, making sure to put it into the correct compartment. Fill the compartment with storage solution, and seal it tightly. Repeat – Repeat the above steps for your other contact lens. Clean – Rinse out your contact lens holder with saline solution after use. Clean your holder with a toothbrush and solution every week, and replace it entirely every month. Replace – Make sure to replace solution after every use of your lenses, and once every 72 hours when your lenses aren’t in use.
  • How to put on your contact lenses
Before you start Wash your hands with soap (preferably non-perfumed, anti-bacterial liquid soap), then rinse and dry your hands with a lint-free towel. It’s a good idea to always put on your contact lenses in the same order, e.g. with your right eye first. This way you won’t get your lenses mixed up. Check the lens isn't inside out To do this, just put the lens on the tip of your finger and hold it up to the light. If the edges flare out, it's inside out. If it looks like a smooth-edged cup, it’s ready to go. Hold your eye open With your free hand, gently hold your upper eyelid so you don’t blink. With the lens on your finger tip, use the other fingers of your applying hand to pull down your lower eyelid. Applying the lens Keep your hand steady and look upwards as you place the lens on your eye, then slowly release your eyelid and close your eye for a moment to allow the lens to settle. Repeat for your other eye.
  • How to remove your contact lenses
Ensure your hands are clean and dry Start with your right eye to avoid mixing up your contact lenses. Look up and carefully pull down your lower eyelid with your middle finger. Slowly bring your index finger to your eye Until you touch the lower edge of the lens. Then slide the lens down to the lower white part of your eye Gently squeeze the lens Between your thumb and index finger and remove it. Repeat for your left lens. After removing Discard of your daily disposables, or clean and disinfect reusable contact lenses. N.B. Never rinse your contact lenses or lens case with tap water.
  • Blurry vision when wearing contact lenses
Contact lenses should provide you with clear, comfortable vision. However, sometimes things can start to look a little blurry when you’re wearing your contacts. This may cause only a slight inconvenience with objects appearing out-of-focus and hazy. You may find yourself constantly blinking, squinting, and rubbing your eyes to get a clearer view. Some of the possible causes of blurry vision while wearing contacts include deposits like dirt, dust, lint and or made up on the lens surface, dry eyes, allergies, infections, or other eye health problems. Dry eyes Dry eye is a condition in which the eyes are not properly moisturised. This can happen because there aren’t enough tears in the eyes, or they’re not of a good quality. It’s quite common in contact lens users and can lead to blurry vision along with other symptoms such as redness and stinging.1 When it’s mild, dry eye can often be tackled with contact lens rewetting drops. Allergies When you have allergies, like hay fever, your eyes tend to water excessively. This can prevent your contact lenses from sitting properly on the cornea, leading to blurry vision. If this does happen, you might need to take a break from using your lenses because the preservatives in some medications can damage contact lenses. Your optometrist may prescribe anti-allergy eye drops that need to be instilled at least 15 minutes before you put your lenses in, and during peak seasonal allergy periods, you may need to reduce contact lens wear time and use lubricating eye drops to keep symptoms like blurry vision in control. Eye infections Eye infections, such as conjunctivitis (pink eye), can lead to symptoms such as blurred vision, watery eyes, redness, and pain. If you are experiencing any symptoms of infection, you should stop using your contacts and see your optometrist as soon as possible. In treating the infection, you may be required to stop using your lenses for some time — but once treated, your vision should return to normal without blurriness.
  • How to avoid blurry vision
How does contact lens aftercare help minimise the risk of blurry vision? The accumulation of debris and protein deposits on the lens surface is a common reason for cloudy or hazy vision with contact lenses. Not surprisingly, dirty contact lenses can make your vision seem blurry — so if you can see clearly through your glasses but have blurry vision with your contacts, deposit build-up could potentially be the reason. An aftercare routine is important to maintain your contact lenses and keep them clean — here are some of our top tips: Follow your optometrist’s instructions on proper cleaning and storage practices and always practice good hand hygiene when handling your lenses. Keep water away from your lenses (avoid showering with lenses in and remove them before swimming). Never use water to clean or store your lenses. Always use fresh contact lens solution to disinfect your contacts. It’s important to follow your wearing schedule, and to not wear your lenses for too long or sleep in them (unless you have extended wear contacts). People who use twice-monthly or monthly lenses need to be extra careful and clean their contacts carefully to avoid blurriness. If you’re experiencing blurry vision while wearing your contact lenses, your first step should be to stop wearing them, and to visit your optometrist as soon as possible. They’ll be able to help you understand the cause and give you next steps.
  • What are Soft Contact Lenses
They’re made from a special type of plastic mixed with water. The water content lets oxygen pass through the lens to your cornea. That makes the lenses more comfortable, lessens dry eyes, and helps keep your cornea healthy. If it doesn't get enough oxygen, it can swell, get cloudy, and cause blurry vision or other, more serious problems.
